Cold Regions

The pilot will work closely with users in the GEO community, with a specific interest in Cold Regions. Three focus areas have been selected for user co-development of products: (1) the Arctic/Svalbard region, (2) Antarctica, and (3) the Himalayan glaciers. A list of planned products includes:

  • Sea ice type and drift maps for the Fram Strait, based on Sentinel-1 SAR data
  • Sea ice concentration for the Arctic; based on satellite altimeter and passive microwave data
  • CMEMS sea ice product Arctic Ocean physics analysis and forecast
  • Near-surface atmospheric aerosol properties (near-real-time) at Zeppelin station, Svalbard.
  • Near-surface atmospheric aerosol properties (near-real-time) at Troll station, Queen Maud Land, Antarctica.
  • CAMS aerosol optical depth forecast product

Additional products will be defined in dialogue with stakeholders in academia, public sector and industry during the project. Results will also feed into education of PhD and young scientists in courses given at the University Centre of Svalbard (UNIS).

Purpose The pilot is developed as part of the NexGEOSS project funded by the European Union's H2020 Research and Innovation programme under grant No. 730329. The aim is to provide a set of products based on in situ, remote sensing and models to support the GEO community, especially the Cold Regions Initiative.
